Hockey Pitch Sizes & Dimensions

Standard field hockey pitch size, as set by the International Hockey Federation (FIH), is 91.4 metres long and 55 metres wide, with goals positioned at both ends and clearly marked shooting circles.

Not every pitch needs to be full size, though. FieldTurf designs its hockey systems with flexibility in mind, so whether your hockey pitch is for top-level tournaments or friendly community fun, there’s a surface to handle every pass, shot and goal. Schools, councils and community groups can choose custom layouts to suit multisports use or limited space.

FAQs ABOUT HOCKEY TURF

+ - How much does a turf field hockey field cost?

The cost of a hockey pitch varies depending on the surface type (water-based vs sand-dressed), site preparation, drainage, field size, and usage level. FieldTurf offers a personalised quote service, an online turf calculator tool, and a network of preferred installers to help you manage your project and understand the costs involved.

+ - How big is a hockey field?

Regulation hockey turf dimensions are measured at 91.4 metres long by 55 metres wide. FieldTurf designs a wide range of synthetic hockey systems, including the elite-level regulation-sized pitches to custom layouts that accommodate schools, community facilities, or multi-sports use.

+ - When did hockey field change to turf?

Hockey began the move from natural grass to synthetic turf in the 1970s, with the 1976 Montreal Olympics marking a major turning point. Since then, the game has evolved into a faster, more skilful game. The switch also gave rise to the development of new techniques, rule changes, and more specialised playing equipment. FieldTurf has led the way with hockey turf innovation and turf design to evolve and optimise the game.

+ - What is hockey turf made of?

Artificial turf for hockey is typically made from polyethylene or texturised microfilament yarns. The pile height, density and infill type all influence speed, roll and player movement. Our proprietary yarn technology and ISO-certified systems deliver first-class surfaces for every playing level.

+ - Why are hockey pitches wet?

Elite level water-based hockey pitches are wetted before play to increase ball speed, reduce friction and enhance player safety. FieldTurf’s water-based systems are engineered to optimise the surface, leaving nothing to chance in the most competitive of matches.
