FieldTurf is the world’s largest manufacturer of synthetic turf for all purposes, specific grades are available to suit all sporting and landscaping requirements.

One of the most popular is…

The DuraSpine System

Duraspine FiberThe DuraSpine monofilament fibre is based on similar structures found in nature. The arched profile features a durable “spine” which runs vertically through the centre of each fibre. Like the centre stem or vein on a blade of grass, this spine gives each fibre unmatched “memory” and thus resistance to matting. This system also enhances ball-roll properties, bio mechanics and aesthetics.

DuraSpine is extruded through a spinneret, and as a “true” monofilament fibre delivers unmatched durability, especially resistance to wear. Tests indicate the DuraSpine fibre is far more resistant to UV and foot traffic, the two main enemies of any turf system. Unlike some new fibres on the market, DuraSpine is not abrasive to players but is a silky and lush just like nature intended.

The DuraSpine Monofilament Turf System is available in duotone green, which gives a life like appearance to the field. FieldTurf can also produce DuraSpine in custom colours to match any requirements for team colours, logos, etc. The fibre is new, but the patented infill system remains the same as that used in thousands of fields worldwide.

INFILL

Similarly sized particles of silica sand and rubber infill hold each other in suspension, compress and expand to provide stability, long life resiliency and proper energy restitution. The washed silica sand does not break down from use or heavy traffic. Each square metre of FieldTurf contains approximately 35 kilograms of silica sand plus 15 kilograms of rubber. A base layer of silica sand is followed by up to 21 individual layers of mixed silica sand and rubber and then topped with a final layer of specially graded rubber, which stays on the top of the infill system.

BACKING

The backing is made of a combination of permeable woven and non-woven polypropylene fabrics to provide exceptional strength, stability and unmatched vertical drainage. The fibres are tufted (stitched) into the backing material in rows according to a patented wide gauge spacing formula that enables the boot studs to penetrate the infill material rather than the surface fibre. This provides excellent traction and very low torsion resistance which prevents injuries. Our patented “finger unit system” adds an impermeable coating over the back of each row of stitching, creating a chemical and mechanical bond for enhanced “tuft bind”, leaving the rest of the backing material totally permeable and creating rows of drainage channels.

DuraSpine Stages

Stage 1

The fibres are tufted into the backing at a patented row width of 2 cm - the approx stud width of an average sports boot.

Stage 2

The patented finger unit coats just the fibre rows for superior strength, leaving the rest of the backing fully porous for unmatched drainage.

Stage 3

The finished carpet sections are laid on pitch and sewn together. Lines, markings or logos completed, the turf is now ready for infilling.

Stage 4

The patented layering begins with several layers of clean, washed silica sand to stabilize and support the entire system.

DuraSpine Step 3

DuraSpine Step 4

Stage 5

A formulated mix of clean rubber and silica sand are layered into the system. Over 370,000 kilograms of infill will be added.

Stage 6

Multiple layers of these same sized particles of rubber and silica sand ensure proper energy restitution without compaction.

DuraSpine Step 6

Stage 7

Up to twenty-one passes of layering ensures that the infill mix stays in suspension, neither segregating nor compacting.

Stage 8

The final layers are made up of a larger sized rubber, which remain on the surface to provide a soft, safe landing while reducing contact with silica sand particles.
